Arthur Miller’s timely and ever-relevant political parable, The Crucible, comes to the Globe Theatre stage. Book The Crucible tickets on London Theatre.
The Crucible is a play set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. Paranoia and mass hysteria sweep through the town as rumours are spread about a group of girls practicing witchcraft. The witch hunts grow, and nobody is safe. How far will the residents go to protect themselves?
The show’s talented ensemble includes Sarah Belcher (Hamnet), Sarah Cullum (The Peter Rabbit Easter Adventure), Gavin Drea (Hamlet), Joshua Dunn (The Duchess of Malfi), Steve Furst (My Fair Lady), James Groom (Killer Joe), and Joanne Howarth (Much Ado About Nothing).
The Crucible in London also has a talented creative team led by director Ola Ince (Othello, Romeo and Juliet).
Ince said, “I’m very excited to share Arthur Miller’s historic epic in the unique immersive space of The Globe Theatre. Combining The Crucible’s big ideas about power, freedom, and gender with the strength of this phenomenal cast is absolutely thrilling!”
The creative team also includes designer Amelia Jane Hankin (Richard III), music composer Renell Shaw (Brief Encounter), fight director Kevin McCurdy (As You Like It), movement director Ebony Molina (Just For One Day), and intimacy director Raniah Al-Sayed (Peaky Blinders: The Rise).
Since its 1953 premiere, The Crucible has cemented itself as a classic of theatre—in 1953 it earned four Tony Awards, including for Best Play. The play has also inspired numerous other creative works, including various films and television programs, such as in 2006 when the performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Gielgud Theatre was recorded.
The play has had numerous revivals worldwide, including the 2016 Broadway revival. Vulture’s review of the production said, “The distinctions between human and inhuman, between animate and inanimate, are always collapsing.”
